MAKE THE MOST OF TIMBERS BEAUTY (published in the complete home solutions book)

While Wood is rated for furnishing our homes, it is not usually regarded as a construction material for building houses. Wooden houses are usually pictured as old, badly built, unexciteing structures. Recently however, timber has made a comeback, owning to almost unlimited designs, finish quality and exterior cladding choices it offers.

Timber structures have undergone momentous design changes and are becoming more stylish in appearance without loosing the nostalgic appeal that distinguishes them from their more conventional counter-parts. These structures are available in almost any desired architectural style and can be designed to satisfy any requirement.

A key factor when deciding to switch to timber construction is that wood has no undeniable Organic charm and is naturally suited for exterior use.

Its capability to connect through grain patterns, natural textures and response to seasonal changes make it distinctive. Particular Wood species such as Mahogany, Saligna, Balau and Teak are naturally resilient to decay and can be shaped into any form you require. These woods weather stylishly. Wear well while in use, and have textures that charm the eye with a play of light and shadows unrivaled by any other construction material.

Timber buildings offer an extensive variety of external and internal finishes. The choices of cladding range from timber boards molded in traditional shiplap, half log style and other fibre shapes, to cement boards and brick and stone veneers. Another Factor that makes timber the inevitable choice is the Global trend towards using environmentally friendly products in daily living. Not only is there the least wastage and disturbance to the environment during the construction process, but the processing of wood consumes conciderably less energy than other building materials. A timber beam with a span of 15 meters or longer only requires around 20% of the energy needed to manufacture a reinforced concrete beam.

Another benefit of Timber is that the structure can be built almost anywhere, despite difficult terrain, and any additional costs pertaining to foundations are minimal, compared to those connected to a conventional brick and mortar home. The ability of timber structures to weather soil movements without damage is also significant.

The Timber building method used in South Africa closely follows techniques used World Wide, but has been modified to suit our climate conditions and the accessibility and dominance of an assortment of building supplies.

Ultimately, Wood is a remarkable building material. It is strong, durable and light, with outstanding insulating properties and an unmatched beauty that will grow old with you.
